Written by Christina O'Handley | June 14, 2017

The auto industry makes a massive contribution to the well-being of the U.S. economy, accounting for approximately 3.5% of the U.S. GDP and employing more than 2.5 million workers.

To discover which auto companies make the biggest impact on the U.S. economy, American University's Kogod School of Business released their 2017 Made in America Auto Index

The Index uses seven different points to rank 419 automobiles on how American they are. These points include:

1. Profit Margin
2. Labor
3. R & D
4. Inventory and Capital
5. Engine
6. Transmission
7. Body, Chassis and Electrical Components

So which cars scored the highest? The Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia all tied for first place with a score of 85.5. The Ford F150 and Chevrolet Automic Transmission Corvette came in second and third, respectively.
